equality contrasted to uniformity

Equal value does not necessarily mean equal quality, whether it be the barter system, wine, or anything regarding sex.
I am, of course, deeply aware that when a civilization crumbles, that involves the very relations of the sexes. Equality is not, it must not be, uniformity. The other day I read an orbiter dictum, something that Tocqueville wrote, more than 170 years ago. "It is easy to see that in thus striving to equal the sexes one degrades them both; and that nothing could ever come of such a gross confusion of Nature's work but weak men and unchaste women."
~John Lukacs in 'Last Rites' (2009)
