Constitution by courage of conviction

written on April 9 by Matt Bedard
The signers of our Declaration of Independence and founders of our nation did not just support their signatures with witty rhetoric and money. Five were captured, tortured and executed by the British for treason. Nine signers and four of their sons fought and died as volunteers in the Revolutionary army. Many more suffered the loss of their homes and families to the revolution, and most never recovered the wealth they lost to the war. No, the war wasn't fought solely by 56 rich old white men. But one doesn't have to be poor to make sacrifices for others, or have faith in a higher ideal.
