can Rand Paul count up to Strom Thurmond?

Rand Paul would have to go another 15 hours to beat Strom Thurmond for longest filibuster. However, that would be one of their only comparisons. Thurmond fought against human rights. Paul is fighting for them. Perhaps their one similarity would be opposition to exceeding federal authority, but these are different times, and the two cannot be compared.

... all the laws of Washington and all the bayonets of the Army cannot force the Negro into our homes, into our schools, our churches and our places of recreation and amusement.
- Democrat Strom Thurmond in opposition of the civil rights bill of 1957.

Thurmond was succeeded by the KKK's Robert Byrd, also a Democrat, who held the longest seat in the history of the U.S. Congress.
