Black Fridayhol

I offer no serious help.

Michelle Obama is costing Americans over 1.5 million dollars

“In my own life, in my own small way, I have tried to give back to this country that has given me so much,” she said. “See, that’s why I left a job at a big law firm for a career in public service,”— Michelle Obama.

She should get on her knees and scrub floors across this great nation for the rest of her life for the simple price of what her greed and avarice costs the citizens.

She is greedy. She is vain. She is a horrible person. Let that be that.

The article, which became a chain letter viewed by millions of Americans, reported that Michelle Obama requires more than twenty attendants - - more than any First Lady in U.S. History. It provided the following list of White House staff members assigned to the First Lady:

  1. $172,2000 - Sher, Susan (Chief Of Staff)
  2. $140,000 - Frye, Jocelyn C. (Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Policy And Projects For The First Lady)
  3. $113,000 - Rogers, Desiree G. (Special Assistant to the President and White House Social Secretary)
  4. $102,000 - Johnston, Camille Y. (Special Assistant to the President and Director of Communications for the First Lady)
  5. $102,000 - Winter, Melissa E. (Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief Of Staff to the First Lady)
  6. $90,000 - Medina, David S. (Deputy Chief Of Staff to the First Lady)
  7. $84,000 - Lelyveld, Catherine M. (Director and Press Secretary to the First Lady)
  8. $75,000 - Starkey, Frances M. (Director of Scheduling and Advance for the First Lady)
  9. $70,000 - Sanders, Trooper (Deputy Director of Policy and Projects for the First Lady)
  10. $65,000 - Burnough, Erinn J. (Deputy Director and Deputy Social Secretary)
  11. $65,000 - Reinstein, Joseph B. (Deputy Director and Deputy Social Secretary)
  12. $62,000 - Goodman, Jennifer R. (Deputy Director of Scheduling and Events Coordinator For The First Lady)
  13. $60,000 - Fitts, Alan O. (Deputy Director of Advance and Trip Director for the First Lady)
  14. $60,000 - Lewis, Dana M. (Special Assistant and Personal Aide to the First Lady)
  15. $52,500 - Mustaphi, Semonti M. (Associate Director and Deputy Press Secretary To The First Lady)
  16. $50,000 - Jarvis, Kristen E. (Special Assistant for Scheduling and Traveling Aide To The First Lady)
  17. $45,000 - Lechtenberg, Tyler A. (Associate Director of Correspondence For The First Lady)
  18. $45,000 - Tubman, Samantha (Deputy Associate Director, Social Office)
  19. $40,000 - Boswell, Joseph J. (Executive Assistant to the Chief Of Staff to the First Lady)
  20. $36,000 - Armbruster, Sally M. (Staff Assistant to the Social Secretary)
  21. $36,000 - Bookey, Natalie (Staff Assistant)
  22. $36,000 - Jackson, Deilia A. (Deputy Associate Director of Correspondence for the First Lady)

Readers throughout the country expressed outrage that Mrs. Obama would hire an unprecedented number of staffers in the midst of the Great Recession.

There's more.

When questioned by Mr. Gore, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, Michelle Obama’s press secretary, said that the First Lady does retain a staff of more than twenty who remain at her beck and call. But the actual number is 24, not 22, as the article reported.

Mrs. Lelyyeld failed to provide the names of the two additional attendants to Mrs. Obama. But she did confirm that six staffers who do not have “first lady” in their title but are a part of the First Lady’s office staff, such as Desiree Rogers, who bears the title “Special Assistant to the President and White House Social Secretary,” and Natalie Bookey, who is listed as a “staff assistant.”

What’s more, even a list of 24 would be incomplete since it would fail to include the names of makeup artist Ingrid Grimes-Miles, 49, and “First Hairstylist” Johnny Wright, 31, both of whom travel aboard Air Force One and provide Mrs. Obama with daily attention.

This adds up to a whopping $1,600,700.00 and the amount doesn’t include the elite benefit packages granted to the White House staff and their significant others (include same-sex partners). Nor does the figure take into account the salaries for the two additional full-time staff members mentioned by Mrs. Obama’s Press Secretary nor the full time hair-dresser and makeup artist assigned to her. A guesstimate of the total salaries for Mrs. Obama’s attendants is $1,750,00.00 plus the additional benefits.

In contrast
Bess Truman and Mamie Eisenhower had to shell out the salaries for 5 of their personal secretaries from their own pocketbooks.
Mind you Laura Bush and Hillary Rodham Clinton were not saints and I am not sure how Jackie Kennedy measures up....

definition of "immanentizing the eschaton"

From the 2002-01-16 Goldberg File:

At the end of my column, "We Can See Clearly Now," I chastised many of you for not being more zealous promoters of NRO. I wrote:

I'm not asking anyone to become the high-minded ideological equivalent of a Howard Stern listener, calling in to shows to ask Brian Lamb if he's immanentized his eschaton lately, but it would be nice if you could swing the big foam finger with "NRO's Number 1" every now and then.

This elicited three types of responses: 1) people wanting to know where they could buy a big foam finger with "NRO's Number 1" on it, 2) ecstatic shouts of "Thank God someone remembers!" or "Nice Illuminati reference!" and 3) people who wanted to know, "What the hell does 'immanentized his eschaton' mean?"

It is this last category of readers who were ensnared by my conservative dork trap. And now that I have you tied up in curiosity, like Butch and Marsellus in Pulp Fiction, I can indulge myself at my leisure. "Immanentize the eschaton" is a hard-core conservative insider-thing. Sort of like saying "TK-421, where are you?" to a Star Wars freak.

In modern parlance, the phrase was coined by the late, great Eric Voegelin in The New Science of Politics in 1952. Voegelin doesn't make for easy reading, and if you can get through The New Science of Politics you probably think I'm an idiot and aren't reading this column anyway. One small example: Voegelin writes, "The problem of an eidos in history, hence, arises only when a Christian transcendental fulfillment becomes immanentized. Such an immanentist hypostasis of the eschaton, however, is a theoretical fallacy." Now, if you can understand that the first time through, you probably need a tan.

Anyway, Voegelin believed that Western civilization took a wrong turn under those damnable Gnostics. Gnostics are small furry creatures with opposable thumbs and who tend to get into your garbage cans. Oh, wait. Sorry. Those are raccoons (whom Cosmo considers to be Gnostics — very long story there).

Gnostics were pre-Christian, early Christian, and various Jewish sects who believed that if you stood on one foot while saying the alphabet backwards, or some other silliness, you could release your soul from material constraints while you were still alive.

Actually, that may not be exactly right either. The problem is that Gnosticism took many forms, in many places, over many distinct periods (sort of like bell-bottom pants). The central thing to keep in mind is that Gnostics believed that personal enlightenment — or revelation to a specific truth or viewpoint — liberated you from the need to find salvation in the afterlife or through any conventional, institutional means. Instead of going to salvation, they brought salvation to them (a Muslim Gnostic, I assume, could have his 72 virgins delivered to his home — which, if true, would make Islamic Gnosticism the fastest-growing religion in the world, for men). It's not surprising, then, that the Catholic Church was constantly putting out Gnostic fires through most of its history.

Because the Gnostics believed they — and they alone — had figured out God's plan in the here and now, they tended to be very, very smug and more than a little annoying (except when they were on the rack, which tended to make them a lot less smirky). It also inclined Gnostics to argue that heaven could be established here on earth, that through material or political means they could perfect the inherently imperfectible.

If that sounds shockingly like Hillary Clinton to you, you deserve a door prize ("But I don't need a door!" my couch just heckled). Voegelin believed that Gnosticism flourished in the liberal, leftist, Nazi, and Communist minds. These folks were hell-bent (heh, heh) on creating heaven on earth. According to Voegelin's perspective, Ralph Nader is a direct descendant of — I am not making this up — such 9th-century crypto-Gnostic thinkers as Scotus Eriugena (if you are tempted to write me saying, "Eriugena was a pantheist, not a Gnostic," I bet you need a tan too).

So: Immanentize means to make part of the here and now. Eschaton, like eschatology, relates to the branch of theology which deals with humanity's destiny. You know, the end times, when all of that wacky, end-timey, Seventh-Seal stuff happens (oceans boil, the righteous ascend to heaven, Carrot Top is funny, etc). Hence "immanentizing the eschaton" means, in effect, trying to make what is reserved for the next life part of the here and now. You can see why all sorts of cults, heretical sects, Scientologists, and various flavors of Mother Jones readers — including the Fighting Illuminati — would be accused of doing precisely that.

So why do conservatives care about all this so much? Well, because in the 1950s and 1960s, thanks largely to William F. Buckley's popularization of the phrase, Young Americans For Freedom turned it into a political slogan. Pale YAFers sported bumper stickers warning, "Don't Immanentize the Eschaton." I believe buttons were made for Mr. Buckley's mayoral campaign when he ran against that renowned eschaton immanentizer, John Lindsay, saying the same thing.

Now that you know all that, I should apologize to Brian Lamb for suggesting that he's such a person. However, you can hardly deny that some C-SPAN callers would dearly love to immanentize the eschaton.

It is important to realize the similarities between the Gnostics and the humanists, being a branch of leftism as I see it, a descendant of Christianity and rightist philosophy. Their idea is that their own respective personal knowledge and possession of such knowledge is a key to salvation, not a relationship with God.

GOP health, feminity with Burqa Barbie and Katie Couric, Eco-Fascists' case unravels

  • Weekly Standard extols Katie Couric's femininity with pictures.
  • Mark Steyn talks about the recent discovery that the eco-fascists were covering up crucial scientific data and that a man named Phil is scapegoated. The only relevant to me is this (not written by Steyn):
We’re dealing with an incomplete understanding of the way the earth system works… When we come to the last few years when we haven’t seen a continuation of that (warming) trend we don’t understand all of the factors that create earth’s climate...We just don’t understand the way the whole system works… See, these people work with models, computer modelling. So when the computer modelling and the real world data disagree you’ve got a very interesting problem…
We do not understand the history of the world's climate yet we are declaring what are not patterns and what are.
  • Barbie is wearing a burqa for Mohammedan girls to realize that even Barbie can be forced into Eastern traditions. It is for charity.

Elizabeth Dole praises Mike Bouchard’s agenda, vision
Respected national leader backs Bouchard for Michigan governor

Oakland County- Former presidential cabinet member and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole announced her support of Mike Bouchard for Michigan governor, praising Oakland County sheriff as the “right person to get the state back on it’s feet.”

“Michigan needs courage, vision and leadership,” Dole said. “In short, Michigan needs Mike Bouchard. I am impressed with his depth of knowledge, well-thought agenda and willingness to do what’s right regardless of political consequences. That’s why I support Mike Bouchard for Michigan governor. He’ll restore the Great Lakes State to it’s rightful status as an economic powerhouse, a leader in education and a world-class destination.”

Dole’s distinguished resume includes service as North Carolina’s U.S. senator from 2003-2009, secretary of transportation from 1983-1987, U.S. secretary of labor from 1989-1990, president of the American Red Cross from 1991-1999, and chairwoman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 2006-2007. She also continued her service to our nation by seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2000.

Dole is married to former U.S. Sen. and presidential contender Bob Dole of Kansas.

“Elizabeth Dole has taken public service to its highest level,” said Bouchard, an Oakland County Republican. “She has devoted her life to bettering our nation. Sen. Dole’s unwavering belief in the American Spirit and her countless sacrifices makes her a real inspiration. Her vote of confidence in my vision for Michigan is deeply appreciated. I have tremendous respect for Sen. Dole and her husband Bob, a true American hero.”

Dole added that she has a personal interest in Michigan’s future. Bob Dole recuperated in a Battle Creek hospital after being severely wounded in World War II.

“Michigan will always have a special place in the Dole family’s heart,” she said. “I want what’s best for the state and its wonderful people. I know Michigan can rebound from its economic challenges but it will take strong leadership. Mike Bouchard is that leader.”

Dole’s support is the latest in the line of impressive endorsements earned by Bouchard. Other members of the Bouchard team include Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, former Lt. Gov. Connie Binsfeld, former first lady Michelle Engler, former Michigan Republican Party co-chair Jane Abraham and Bishop Ira Combs.

Nissan Vanette (is not an ambulance)

In 1985 through 1986 children everywhere were told that this

was an ambulance as well a passenger van.

That was the world of the Transformers for you. Trust me: the Nissan Vanette is many things but it is not an ambulance. I do not recall Autobot Ratchet ever transforming into an ambulance.

Comment-Update:
Who say so????

Nissan Vanette also been modified into ambulances for transporting non critical patient. My working place have two of these.
I've never heard of it being done myself, and no movie or toy has ever presented Ratchet converting into a vehicle that exists in the settings being portrayed.

quotable from Justice Scalia - Brilliance wasted in lawyering

I paraphrased it as the shame that we waste so many brilliant minds placing them into the bodies of lawyers.
Justice Scalia on whether smart people going into the law is a good thing. From The ABA Journal:

“I used to be disappointed that so many of the best minds in the country were being devoted to this enterprise.

“I mean there’d be a … public defender from Podunk, you know, and this woman is really brilliant, you know. Why isn’t she out inventing the automobile or, you know, doing something productive for this society?

“I mean lawyers, after all, don’t produce anything. They enable other people to produce and to go on with their lives efficiently and in an atmosphere of freedom. That’s important, but it doesn’t put food on the table, and there have to be other people who are doing that. And I worry that we are devoting too many of our very best minds to this enterprise.”

Via Volokh.

As said, if these people are so smart perhaps we should not waste them in legal scuffles as we should deploy them in social or technological construction.

On the other hand a lot of lawyers are parasites and destructive creatures, politicians- most politicians are not burdened with an overabundance of awareness.

I took the quoting from Reason although its point is lodged into my memory.

survivalism

The logical assumption when faced with an -ist is that there is an accompanying -ism but I am certain that the assumption in many cases does not flow into an actual fact. Which is to say that there is no survivalism to explain the ideas and beliefs, an ideology or a philosophy, simply to live and practice as a survivalist.

The simple fact is that there is no such as word as survivalism. Survivalism is not word. Yet Libertarianism is a word and there is no clear, unified distinct philosophy of Libertarianism that all Libertarians can be defined by or under which agree to live. Having an -ism as a word does not mean the word has a direct, distinct, narrow practical meaning, although it certainly can be a general guide if not altogether practical. Ideally a libertarian is antithetical to the authoritarian in the simplest sense. To the point of defining opposing forces the libertarians are what opposes the statists in modern practical politics. In this sens libertarianism is a broad umbrella under which a (very) loose coalition of different forces preside, even when not in a state of political alliance or coalition.

On the other hand the libertarians can be seen as alternative views to the Conservatives, conservatives, however you wish to capitalize, when it comes to ideas on the right. Under those circumstances it is already understood that living on the Political Left, be it with the Democrats or whoever, is not a palatable option. Under these terms the libertarian definition is certainly a narrow one, excluding all that the conservatives and their conservatism would find allowable. Libertarianism finds intolerable what conservatism may stomach. The umbrella of the conservatives often finds statists hiding underneath it; these statists usuall are left-wing Progressives and are almost always Republicans. These may define themselves as Conservative under loose definitions, which render the use accurate yet makes the word itself useless.

Conservative works better as a word when it is applied in a way that makes its beholders and beliefs activists for smaller government and broader power stretched among more citizens, that is federalism. Typically the term is wielded in self-identification by people who firmly believe in various moral and moralistic beliefs, Western Judeo-Christian and by all good measures those beliefs are just and admirable. The problem lies in application. The problem lies in political application as the folk in question are political individuals who solve problems politically or get elected by identifying government solutions to general problems through a lens of wholesomeness or religiosity. Governor Mike Huckabee before 2009 was such a "Conservative". He was not a true Conservative as he looked at government as an instrument of positive application for various problems, such as obesity. I believe he has reformed now which does not change the simple facts. His morals in many so-called "social issues" were spot-on, but he would still expand government and was not a "Fiscal Conservative". President Bush has his "Compassionate Conservatism".

Compassionate Conservatism is a redundant phrase as being Conservative is being compassionate. Yet while President Bush had enough bonafides to carry the title "Conservative" and still seem authentic he governed as a statist in certainly enough ways that he needed, in his own mind and others', to qualify his brand of Conservatism as if conscious that it could never fit pure definitions of the real thing. I don't care what they say; Diet Doctor Pepper is not regular Doctor Pepper and regardless of how it tastes real sugar is real sugar.

One of the benefits of sugar versus an artifical sweetener or an approximation of desired effect is that we know what sugar does and few really know what the chemical properties of the artificial sweetener will be.

Hence why words are valuable when used properly and consistently. When we know what Conservatism is and what it is not then it as a word is more potent. When the meaning is blurred it can become dangerous and mis-applied, which is what happened, in part, in 2008 when the economic horrors came crashing upon us and the Vile Leftists successfully framed the fiscal liberalism and greed (which is certainly not Conservative or part of Adam Smith's recognition of healthy economic practices) as "Conservative". The Conservatives and the Republicans left themselves open to such framing and it never helped that we let John McCain claim to be one of us.

Yet by certain definitions John McCain cannot be denied the label of Conservative, a fact which is I consider woeful.

Now we certainly want the labels to make sense and to be used consistently so we have a guide for action and perhaps even for allegiance. Yet we have many labels and it is difficult to know which of them should be housed under what umbrella, in what hierarchy or if they are in opposition to one another at any given time.

Naturally even the term "Liberalism" only has its meaning based on the time and place for context. Politics are full of -isms and no one can use them properly, least of all those who are supposed to be masters of those -isms.

So I wonder, what the heck is a survivalist?

And if one dies, is he really a survivalist? Has anyone heard of a dead survivalist? It just sounds stupid: the survivalist who failed to survive.

It raises the possibility: an -ism may be more a matter of intent.
